At the North Pole, right next to the giant, snow-covered Christmas tree (the one in the photo), Santa Claus installed a shiny new slot machine this year. It looked a bit like an arcade machine, but instead of a joystick, it had only one small coin slot.
The elves were confused.
The Chief Technician Elf, Zgryt, proud of his new position, wore a white T-shirt that served as an instruction manual. He pointed nervously at it: "Boss, it says 'INSERT A COIN FOR GIFTS'. But we... we don't have any money at the Pole!"
All the presents lay silent and devoid of magic under the tree. Time was slipping away.
Santa approached, smiling beneath his mustache. He saw the panic in the elf's eyes.
"Grind, calm down. It's not that kind of coin," he said.
He walked up to a little reindeer that was trying to eat a Christmas bauble and scratched it behind the ear so hard that the reindeer jumped for joy, letting out a loud, happy squeal.
Nicholas quickly caught the note of that squeak in his hand. In his glove, the sound instantly transformed into a single, warm, golden coin forged from pure joy.
He threw it into the vending machine. CLICK!
The machine made no sound. Instead, the star atop the tree shone so brightly that it illuminated the entire mountain valley. All the presents under the tree trembled and began to magically glow. They were ready.
"See, Zgrzecie?" Santa winked. "The gift machine doesn't run on money. It runs on luck."
